Sliding Objects with Random Friction
We study the motion of elastic networks driven over a random substrate. Our model which includes local friction forces leads to complex dynamical behavior. We find a transition to a sliding state which belongs to a new universality class. The phase diagram comprises of a pinned state, a stick-slip motion phase, and a free motion phase.
متن کاملRecommendations using Absorbing Random Walks
Collaborative filtering attempts to find items of interest for a user by utilizing the preferences of other users. In this paper we describe an approach to filtering that explicitly uses social relationships, such as friendship, to find items of interest to a user. Modeling user-item relations as a bipartite graph we augment it with user-user (social) links and propose an absorbing random walk ...
متن کاملLearning with Partially Absorbing Random Walks
We propose a novel stochastic process that is with probability αi being absorbed at current state i, and with probability 1 − αi follows a random edge out of it. We analyze its properties and show its potential for exploring graph structures. We prove that under proper absorption rates, a random walk starting from a set S of low conductance will be mostly absorbed in S. Moreover, the absorption...
متن کاملRandom Walks with Random Projections
Random projections have been widely used for dimensionality reduction of high dimensional problems. In this paper we show how to compute some popular random walk based proximity measures (hitting and commute times, personalized pagerank) using random projections in undirected graphs. A number of important graph-based real world applications such as image segmentation, collaborative filtering in...
متن کاملRandom walks with random velocities.
We consider a random walk model that takes into account the velocity distribution of random walkers. Random motion with alternating velocities is inherent to various physical and biological systems. Moreover, the velocity distribution is often the first characteristic that is experimentally accessible. Here, we derive transport equations describing the dispersal process in the model and solve t...
